The fall of Dhaka was the biggest loss that Pakistan had to bear due to a ban on the freedom of expression, and the irony is that the authorities didn’t learn any lesson from this tragedy in the context of letting people what is their right to know.
The media is apparently enjoying more freedom as compared to the previous eras in Pakistan; however the media, at present, is bound to functioning under the umbrella of commercialism, for which politicians are also responsible, along with other stakeholders, as many of the public representatives speak for the freedom of press during their election campaigns, but forget their promises by putting their manifestos aside when they reach the corridors of power. These views were expressed by speakers during a seminar organised to mark ‘International Press Freedom Day’ on Tuesday by The Department of Mass Communication, University of Karachi.
