Terrorists fleeing Karachi, Nawaz tells WTO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has informed the World Trade Organisation (WTO) that terrorists are on the run in the country as a result of a successful military operation since peace has been restored in Karachi. This will help Pakistan attract foreign investments by building confidence among investors and businessmen.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told the visiting Director General of the WTO here Monday that an improved law and order situation under the present democratic government has resulted in economic stability in Pakistan. “Our government is addressing the power shortage issue and we expect to completely resolve this issue by 2018, after the completion of certain power projects,” he said. Peace is restored to the mega city of Karachi and terrorists are on the run due to the successful military operation.

These will help Pakistan attract foreign investments by building the confidence of investors and businessmen, the prime minister noted with satisfaction. Roberto Azevedo, the DG WTO, called on the prime minister here at the PM House before the latter’s departure for Quetta and had candid discussion about the mutual cooperation with the world trade body. Federal Commerce Minister Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan and Secretary to the Prime Minister (SPM) Fawad Hasan Fawad were also present during the meeting.

Warmly welcoming the WTO DG, Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan is actively pursuing regional integration and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which consists of $46 billion investment and infrastructure projects. These are aimed at boosting trade across the region, he added.

The CPEC alone has the potential to immensely enhance trade amongst the regional countries and improve the lives of millions of people in the region, he said.Highlighting the importance of trade, Prime Minister Nawaz said that Pakistan is gearing up its trade-related laws in order to achieve full integration in the Global Supply Chain (GSC). Pakistan is ready to enhance its partnership with the WTO and is open to international competitive trade ideas, added the prime minister.

Roberto Azevedo thanked the prime minister for the warm welcome and said that Pakistan is an ideal destination for business and investments. He complimented the prime minister on his vision on economy and his efforts to take up challenges of political stability, improving security, achieving energy self sufficiency and infrastructure development.
