A new medical city of 2,000 beds or four hospitals of 500 beds each is proposed to be built in different parts of Islamabad, including the rural areas, as part of the Prime Minister’s Health Reforms Vision for the capital, Minister of State for Capital Administration & Development Division (CADD) Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told the media at the inauguration of a female doctors’ hostel in Polyclinic Hospital here on Thursday.

Dr. Tariq said the proposed plan would be finalised after a formal approval from the prime minister. “Unless there is an improvement in the quality of medical facilities in Basic Health Units (BHU), the pressure on main hospitals will remain high. All basic health facilities including provisions for minor surgeries will be provided in BHUs so that only patients for tertiary care should be referred to the main hospitals,” the minister stated.

Dr. Tariq said, health reforms for Islamabad have been initiated along the same lines as the education reforms programme for Islamabad. “New emergencies in Polyclinic and PIMS will be completed soon and the conditions of wards and OPDs will also be improved through provision of better medical facilities and qualified doctors,” he added.

Later, Dr. Tariq visited the emergency, medical wards and various units of the hospital and directed the newly appointed executive director of Polyclinic, Dr. Amjad, to turn the hospital into a state-of-the-art facility by ensuring provision of all modern facilities of medical care.
