633,600 crimes registered in country one year

Official data shows 61pc crimes registered in Punjab,
24pc in KP, 12pc in Sindh; Balochistan, Islamabad,
GB and AJK share rest of 3pc crimes

ISLAMABAD: Over sixty percent of crimes registered in the country every year happen in the Punjab, government data shows.

Though during the past year crime rate, especially of murder, came down significantly in the country, the Punjab retains top slot among the provinces in number of crimes happening in each province. KP is behind the Punjab and Sindh is at the third slot.

According to the data, a total of 633,600 crimes were registered in the country of which 383,055 happened in Punjab i.e. 61 percent. While 24 percent of the total criminal cases were registered in KP and only 12 percent of the total crimes in the country were noticed in Sindh. Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir shared the rest of three percent of crimes that happened in the country.

Punjab is the largest province of the country with a population of over 100 million; Sindh has a population of over 55 million; KP has around 27 million and Balochistan’s population is 13 million. During the past decade, around 60 percent of the crimes that happened in the country were registered in the Punjab.

Out of the total 9,486 murders registered in the country in 2015, 4422 (46.6%) happened in Punjab; 1907 (20 %) in Sindh; 2496 (26.3%) in KP; 412 (4.3%) in Balochistan; 116 (1.2%) in Islamabad; 3 in Railways; 54 in GB and 76 in AJK.

78.3 percent (213 out of 272) of the gang-rapes registered in the country in 2015 occurred in Punjab; 11 percent (30) in Sindh; 9.5 percent (26) in Islamabad and only 3 cases were registered in KP.

74.25 percent incidents of kidnapping/abduction occurred in Punjab in 2015 i.e. 13315 out of 17932. While 16 % (2871) of such crimes happened in Sindh; 6.2 percent (1116 abductions/kidnappings) happened in KP; 227 people were abducted in Balochistan; 89 in Islamabad, 34 in GB and 279 in AJK.

A total of 232 cases of kidnapping for ransom were registered in the country of which, 92 happened in Sindh; 63 in Punjab; 49 in KP, 19 in Balochistan; 8 in Islamabad and 1 in GB.

Out of the total 93 highway dacoities, 53 happened in Punjab; 26 in Sindh, 1 in KP; 9 in Balochistan; 3 in GB and 1 in AJK. 19 out of 28 Petrol Pump dacoities registered in the country in 2015 happened in Punjab; 8 in Sindh and 1 in Balochistan. of Highway Robberies, the country witnessed 192 such robberies of which 152 (77.5%) happened in Punjab; 32 in Sindh; 3 in KP; 6 in Balochistan; 2 in GB and 1 in Kashmir.

Of the 2197 other dacoities registered in the country, 1242 (56.5%) happened in Punjab; 820 (37 %) happened in Sindh; 48 in KP; 55 in Balochistan; 25 in Islamabad; 1 in Railways; 4 in GB and 2 in AJK.

Under the head of other robberies, the country witnessed 14833 incidents of which 11607 (78.25 %) happened in Punjab; 2545 (17 %) happened in Sindh; 230 in KP; 177 in Balochistan; 208 in Islamabad; 1 in Railways; 14 in GB and 51 in AJK. Out of the total 15736 burglaries, 12762 (81 %) happened in Punjab; 1323 (8.4 %) happened in Sindh; 878 (5.5 %) in KP; 162 in Balochistan; 330 in Islamabad; 56 in GB and 225 in AJK.

90 percent of the total cattle theft recorded in the country happened in Punjab in 2015. Out of 6502 such cases, Punjab witnessed 5837; while 437 cases were registered in Sindh; 97 in KP; 53 in Balochistan; 21 in Islamabad; 22 in GB and 35 in AJK.

Under the head of Motor Vehicle theft/snatching, two-third of such theft occurred in Punjab (18231 out of 27067). In Sindh, 5967 vehicles were stolen/snatched; in KP 1094; in Balochistan 876; 714 in Islamabad; 3 from Railways; 47 in GB and 135 from AJK.

Of the total 32400 theft cases registered in the country in 2015, 27452 (84.7 %) happened in Punjab; 2615 in Sindh; 1178 in KP; 248 in Balochistan; 512 in Islamabad; 266 in Railways; 60 in GB; 69 in AJK. 

In 2015, 2468 out of 4507 fatal road accidents happened in Punjab; 611 in Sindh; 985 in KP; 155 in Balochistan; 132 in Islamabad; 1 in Railways; 35 in GB and 120 in AJK.

In Punjab, 40005 cases were registered under Arms Act in 2015; 10246 such cases were recorded in Sindh; 21327 in KP; 974 in Balochistan; 942 in Islamabad; 25 in Railways; 229 in GB and 242 in AJK.

Under prohibition order, 51,589 cases were registered in the Punjab in 2015; 7,781 in Sindh; 32,432 in KP; 1,178 in Balochistan; 600 in Islamabad; 94 in Railways, 100 in GB and 692 in AJK.

Under other local and special laws, 43,873 cases were registered in the Punjab; 4,054 in Sindh; 40,931 in KP; 969 in Balochistan; 228 in Islamabad; 912 in Railways; 7 in GB and 348 in AJK.
