After consultation with stakeholders, the final draft of the technical and vocational education and training policy has been submitted to the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training along with PC-1 for approval.

The information was shared with Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training Muhammad Balighur Rehman during a meeting here.

The minister said skills were needed to increase productivity, enhance global competitiveness and contribute to national economic and social policies.

He said Pakistan currently provided technical education to one per cent of its population only, and rated 133 out of 148 countries in terms of competitiveness.

“Vision 2025 and current government’s policy set priorities for development in energy, security, value-added production, infrastructure development and SME growth and therefore, there is a need for a National TVET policy.

This policy will broadly impact the TVET sector in Pakistan. It would bring reforms in TVET sector for the next 10 years. And through this policy we will be able to achieve 1,000,000 publically-funded CBT training places available annually, 250,000 apprenticeships available annually, 40% of TVET provided by the private sector, and 33% of overall federal education budget to TVET etc,” he said.

On the occasion, a presentation was given by the HEC on the establishment of a skill university to monitor overall progress and situation of technical and vocational education in Pakistan.

A monthly review meeting will be held at the ministry for this purpose.

The meeting was attended by the secretary and additional secretary of the Ministry of the Federal Education and Professional Training, NAVTTC chairman and other relevant officials.
