After weeks of speculation, fans of the hit British TV show Sherlock can celebrate as a release date for the new season has finally been revealed. Actor Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson on the detective series, in a recent appearance on the Graham Norton show revealed that the show’s upcoming fourth season could air as early as Christmas later this year.

And since Freeman and his onscreen detective partner Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, have been seen around UK shooting for the show, the timeline sounds about right.

“We are back filming now and the three shows will, I imagine, be out around Christmas,” Freeman told Norton.

Speaking about how disruptive it can be to shoot on location as fans gather around, Freeman noted, “There is always a heightened state of excitement and we sometimes have to respectfully remind them that we have to be focused and it’s not a live gig!”

More scoop on the new season is the fact that for the first time a female director will helm the show. Rachel Talalay, known for Doctor Who and The Flash will direct the first of the three episodes. Andrew Scott, who also starred in the last James Bond film Spectre, makes a come back as Holmes’ arch-nemesis Moriarty while John Watson and wife Mary will be having a baby.
