Geo TV’s period fantasy TV serial, Mor Mahal, the first of its kind to be produced in Pakistan, is all set to make its presence felt on April 24 when it premieres across the country.

Ahead of the airing date, the show’s first official trailer is also out and we have to say, from the looks of it, Mor Mahal is definitely intriguing to those of us who are fed up with Pakistan’s current crop of TV dramas.

Perhaps the most important thing to note is the team behind it and their collective weight lends it a lot of credibility.

Originally conceptualized by Imran Aslam, (President Geo Network) in 2002, written by Sarmad Sehbai in 2004, and directed by Sarmad Khoosat (Manto, Humsafar), the show is more than just a departure from ordinary television productions. Sarmad Khoosat described Mor Mahal as the story of “resilient, fiercely powerful women”, in an earlier conversation with Instep.

Mor Mahal is palace intrigue - a world filled with extraordinary characters plenty of undertones including harems and debauchery, ghostly shadows and power struggle(s).

With a cast that combines veteran actors and younger stars such as Umair Jaswal, Meesha Shafi, Hina Bayat, Sania Saeed, Fizza Ali, Janan Malik among many others, the show (given its magnum opus production design) is a brave effort that will herald a new day in modern television history. For fans of shows like Game of Thrones, Mor Mahal will serve as an appealing, palatable homegrown experience. Watch out.
