Friday, February 29, 2008
LAHORE

PUNJAB Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Ejaz Nisar said Thursday the government was strengthening the education sector on priority as education played a key role in the economic development of a nation.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Lahore international book fair at the Fortress Stadium, he said the government had taken effective steps for human resource development. He said book reading was of vital importance for the promotion of education and the government would arrange book fairs in many cities of the province for motivating people to reading and other positive activities.

The chief minister said no nation could prosper without education, therefore, the government had attached top priority to investment in the sector. He said teachers had been trained and their attendance ensured in schools. He appreciated the organisers for arranging the fair in Lahore where delegates from several countries, including India, will participate.

He said Lahore had a vital importance for its culture and heritage and it was also known for hospitality which foreign publishers would enjoy in the city.

Lahore International Book Fair Trust Secretary-General and noted journalist Najam Sethi said people from all over the world were participating in the fair. He said 170 stalls had been set up where books on all topics were available.

Earlier, the chief minister inaugurated the fair and visited stalls. Talking to journalists, he said holding of the general elections was the mandate of the caretaker government which it had fulfilled by showing complete impartiality.

He said the administrative machinery had not favoured any political party and ensured a free and fair election. He said the caretaker government had fully assisted the Election Commission of Pakistan in the process and provided a conducive atmosphere to people to exercise their right.

To a question, the chief minister said the Punjab government had taken practical steps for promotion of education and the education sector reforms programme was yielding positive results.

The trust chairman, Zubair Saeed, and Saleem Malik were also present.
