 Data Sahib’s Urs begins today
Tuesday, February 26, 2008
LAHORE

The 964th urs (death anniversary) of Hazrat Syed Ali bin Usman Hajvery (Data Gunj Bakhsh) will begin on February 26.

The three-day celebration will be jointly inaugurated by Governor Khalid Maqbool and Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (r) Ejaz Nisar with the traditional chador-laying ceremony and inaugurating a milk sabeel (free distribution of milk) at the shrine.

According to the Auqaf Department spokesman, the urs will have eight sessions based on spiritual enlightenment and spreading the message of Islam. Auqaf, the host department, has allocated Rs 3 million for the urs.

In a meeting, Auqaf Secretary Raees Abbas Zaidi reviewed the arrangements for the event and constituted various committees of the management staff. The prayers for the concluding session of the urs will be held on February 27 and February 28.

The officials appealed to the participants to take care of discipline and the shrineís sanctity during the event. Auqaf urged the people to remain vigilant and inform the security about any dubious character spotted at the shrine to avert any untoward situation.

Meanwhile the City Traffic police had devised a plan for smooth vehicular flow during Urs of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (RA), which would start from February 26 to 28 and for the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) on 28th, claimed Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) on Monday. CTO Ghulam Mehmood Dogar said the Traffic police would also keep a vigilant eye on suspicious elements during this period. They will be supervised by two SPs and 27 other officials in this connection, he said. He said besides, 360 traffic wardens would also perform their duties during the two events. He said that two control rooms had also been established in order to guide the citizens for alternative routes.

The CTO said a huge number of pilgrims visit the city from different parts of Punjab and other provinces to participate in the Urs, which finally lead to massive traffic rush in the City especially in areas situated close to the shrine of Hazrat Data Sahib (RA). He said that extra parking lots would be established with the blockage of three roads in front of the shrine on the occasion. The CTO further said that according to the alternative traffic plan, vehicles coming from Hatchery Chowk, corner of SSP Office, Retigun Road, from Bilal Gunj, Bairi Wala Chowk, Riaz Shahid Road Chowk, Texali Chowk, Mori Gate, Chatter Ji Chowk and from gate of Government College would not be allowed to come on the Lower Mall Road.

Similarly, the traffic coming from Law College Morr will not be allowed to go on Chatter Ji Chowk and towards Urdu Bazaar, he said. He said that the traffic coming from Shahdara would be diverted towards railway station or Niazi Shaheed Chowk to Sagiyan Chowk via Azadi Chowk. Likewise, the traffic coming from Multan Road and Chauburji Chowk would be diverted from MAO College Chowk towards corner of SSP Office and Out Fall Road via Sanda Road, Bund Road and turn by the commissioner office would be diverted. He said that the traffic coming from Inner Circular Road would continue towards its destination via Mori Gate, Urdu Bazaar, Chatter Ji Chowk, Law College and Hatchery Chowk.
