‘Shortage of water, furnace oil, gas mars power generation’
Saturday, January 05, 2008
PESHAWAR: The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) said on Friday due to severe water shortage in the Tarbela, Mangla and Warsak reservoirs, shortage of furnace oil and limited gas supply to some of the important power plants, the power generation capability of Wapda decreased drastically.

Those three major reasons compelled Wapda to carry out load management throughout the country, said a Pesco press release. Pesco, like all other distribution companies in the country, was carrying load management in the NWFP.

"We can overcome the current energy crisis and minimise the duration of load management only with the help of the electricity consumers by conserving energy and stoppage of unnecessary and illegal use of electricity," it said.

Pesco said to save the system from total collapse, the NPCC and the RCC Islamabad sometimes shutdown different grid stations in the country.

Pesco had requested its consumers to conserve energy by means of less consumption and switch off all the unnecessary lights, especially during the peak hours, ie from 6pm to 11pm and to avoid the use of the electricity heaters and the electricity geysers.

Industrial and commercial organisations had also been asked to reduce their consumption of electricity up to 30 per cent and close all the plazas and shops at 6pm.

Peaceful protest was the right of the public, but it was not the solution to the problem, rather, it further added to the difficulties and problems of the consumers and created more inconvenience, the press release maintained.
