NA body wants grant for POF revamping
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Production on Tuesday recommended that an immediate grant of $ 250 million be injected into the mother defence industry, Pakistan Ordinance Factories (POF), for overhauling its aging production units.

The call came soon after the committee, headed by its chairman Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, during their day-long visit to the POF, was briefed by POF Chairman Lt. General Shujaat Zamir Dar at Wah.

The committee was of the unanimous view that the government should make necessary arrangements for provision of necessary funds to the essential sectors such as defence and defence production. Terming the POF a life-line for the countryís defence, the body vowed to make every effort to help meet the challenges confronted by the defence factories complex.

The NA panel was told that the financial support of $250 million was required in two or three phases with the aim to carry out overhaul and revamping of the aging machinery for various production units at the POF. During the question-answer session, the POF chairman apprised the committee that the POF despite all odds had been fulfilling the requirements of the country’s defence forces ranging from a bullet to rockets, mortars and anti-tank shells.

A major concern of the inflation and unprecedented hike in power tariff and other inputs for production was also expressed and the panel suggested that remedial measures were required to be taken at war footing.
