What to cook on this Eid?
Saturday, November 28, 2009

Housewives are busy in making plans regarding cooking something different and delicious on this year’s religious festival of Eidul Azha in order to surprise their loved ones.

Women these days are looking for some novel yet delectable recipes for the three days of Eid to be prepared with the sacrificial meat. A number of popular dishes prepared on this occasion include ‘koftay’, ‘shami kebab’, ‘seekh kebab’, ‘chappal kebab’, ‘shahi mutton biryani’, beef stew, ‘pulao’, ‘Afghani qorma’, etc, that are often Eidul Azha favourites among Muslims.

With various cooking shows telecasted 24/7 on different TV channels nowadays, the curious cooks among women are often seen glued to TV screens with paper and pen in hand, noting down new and cross cultural recipes to either experiment with something innovative or making amendments in the old original recipes. These exclusive dishes are not just made to add colour to the Eid dining table but also to receive praise from the relatives, who particularly visit each other to enjoy a variety of finger licking delicious foods during Eid days.

“This time, I wont make the same old dishes but will try something new that I learnt from a cooking show a few days ago,” said Khadija Shafi, a housewife and mother of three kids. She said the recipes prepared by the cooks on the TV channels are relatively less time-consuming as compared to the old traditional methods. “Trying different recipes will not only save my time but will also embellish my table with mouth-watering foods,” she said.

Many Internet surfing women now find it easier to find out about the latest dishes any time. “It is easier to explore cooking websites and get the recipes of one’s choice,” said Asma Shahzadi. She said there are loads of websites offering scrumptious recipes for Eidul Azha from where one could easily download the recipe and try it out in one’s own kitchen.

On the other hand, some women prefer to cook traditional food items on Eidul Azha, which according to them are spicier, more in line with our taste buds and truly compliment the occasion. “I think my family members will appreciate me more if I stick to the traditional food items,” said Afia Raza adding that whatever she is going to cook would definitely be different from last year’s menu but would include some traditional Eidul Azha dishes as well.
