Amn committee member, son slain in Mohmand

GHALLANAI: Unidentified armed men killed a member of Qandharo Amn Committee and his son early Friday.Sources said that Malik Ameer Said and his son Hazrat Said were on their way home in Qandharo area of Safi tehsil from Ghallanai when unknown gunmen intercepted them and opened indiscriminate fire on them, killing Hazrat Said on the spot. They kidnapped Ameer Said, whose bullet-riddled body was later found dumped on a roadside in Qayyumabad area of Safi tehsil. Meanwhile, security forces demolished the house of a militant identified as Shah Nawaz in Qandharo area.



Bridge blown up in Kohat

KOHAT: Miscreants destroyed a bridge linking Orakzai Agency with Kohat district on Friday. “The bridge linking Bezot area of Orakzai Agency with Ublan area of Kohat was blown up early in the day,” said a police official. He said the police have launched operation in the area but nobody was arrested till the filing of this report. “It may be the handiwork of militants operating in Orakzai Agency,” the official said, requesting anonymity. Meanwhile, DIG Abdullah has banned music programmes in the district to avoid any untoward incident during Eid days.



Tour operator jailed, fined for fraud

PESHAWAR: An accountability court Thursday awarded seven-year rigorous imprisonment to the owner of Aqeel Travels and Tours, Nowshera, besides imposing a fine of Rs40.238 million. Judge Sayed Afsar Shah convicted and sentenced accused Abdul Aqeel to seven-year rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs40.038 million. A joint complaint of 59 affected persons was received by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) director-general that Abdul Aqeel, owner of Aqeel Travels and Tours in Nowshera, deprived them of their hard-earned money on the pretext of sending them for the performance of Haj in 2008. The accused having no Haj quota could not arrange Haj visas, thus deprived the affected people of performing Haj.



Amn body chief killed in Bajaur blast

BAJAUR: An important Malik of Mamond tribe and chief of Mamond Qaumi Lashkar was killed and his three colleagues injured in an explosion here on Friday. Sources said Malik Shahpur Khan was on his way to his home after offering Eidul Azha prayers when remote-controlled device exploded, killing him on the spot and injuring three others. The injured were admitted to Agency Headquarters Hospital. “Malik Shahpur was meeting people after offering prayer outside the mosque when the explosion occurred,” eyewitnesses said. No one claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the political authorities launched probe into the killing.



Copter crash site found

KABUL: Nato says its forces have located the crash site of a helicopter chartered by an international military contractor that was missing in Afghanistan since Monday. The helicopter had been chartered by Supreme Global Service Solutions for a cargo mission in support of Nato troops. Nato said in a statement Friday that the crash site of the MI-8 chopper was located in eastern Afghanistan. It was unclear if anyone died in the crash or what caused the helicopter to go down. Supreme offices reached in Dubai refused to immediately comment.





Afghan official survives attack

KANDAHAR: The governor of Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province survived a bomb strike on his motorcade while heading to prayers for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday on Friday, a spokesman said. The bomb shattered a window of the car that Governor Tooryalai Wesa was travelling in, but he was unhurt, spokesman Zalmai Ayoubi said. One bodyguard was lightly wounded. Kandahar is the birthplace and heartland of the Taliban movement, and also the home city of President Hamid Karzai. Karzai’s half brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, is the powerful head of the provincial council.



Eid inculcates spirit of sacrifice, unity: Moosavi

RAWALPINDI: Quaid-e-Millat Jafariya Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi has said that Eidul Azha is a great occasion of “Milli Wahdat” (national unity) and provides practical lesson of sacrifice. He said this in a message on the occasion of Eidul Azha, says a press release. Agha Moosavi said by fulfilling the commandment of Allah to sacrifice his son Ismael, Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) established an example of obedience and compliance to God and we can overcome our problems by following the spirit of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) even today. He said that had the human beings in general and the Muslims in particular followed the sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and made the sayings of the holy Prophet (PBUH) as beacon of light for themselves they would not have fallen prey to the world colonial powers.



Seven killed in Rawalakot traffic accident

RAWALAKOT: Seven people including the driver of an ill-fated wagon have been killed and 3 injured in a traffic accident at Danda Gambir. As per details, a passenger wagon coming from Danda Gambir was on its way to Hajira when due to over speeding the driver lost control and the wagon fell in to a deep ditch, as a result seven passengers including the driver died on the spot while three were injured. The injured have been shifted to Rawalakot Hospital.



ASI resigns after thrashing by civil judge, relatives

HAFIZABAD: An ASI of the Traffic police tendered his resignation after a civil judge with his relatives severely tortured him and tore his uniform here on Friday. ASI Rai Iftikhar Ahmad was performing his duty near the railway crossing where Civil Judge Tajamal Raza, a resident of Jurian village, along with his relatives was sitting in his car. ASI Rai Iftikhar asked him to remove the car, which infuriated the civil judge and his relatives. They later gave him a sound thrashing and tore his uniform. After the incident, a heavy contingent of police led by DSP Muhammad Amin Butt reached the spot and arrested the civil judge and his relatives. Meanwhile, ASI Rai Iftikhar presented his resignation to the DSP in protest.



Terrorism bid foiled in Bhakkar

BHAKKAR: Police has foiled a major terrorist bid on the eve of Eid in District Bakhar by arresting would be a suicide bomber of banned outfit. District Police Officer Bhakkar Syed Pervez while addressing a news conference told the newsmen that the police on the basis of information report arrested would be a suicide bomber Ayub of banned organisation and recovered 5 kilogram explosive material, detonators, fuse, high explosive jackets, illegal SIMs from his possession. During the initial investigation, DPO went on to say the arrested terrorist has confessed that he wanted to carryout major terrorist activity in District Bhakkar on the eve of Eid. Cases under explosive act and anti-terrorism act have been registered against the terrorist.



Ulema urged to discourge suicide bombings

MIANWALI: Ulema, Khateeb and Zakir should deliver a message that terrorists and suicide bombers are not the Muslims, but criminals who should be punished according to their crimes. These views were expressed by DCO Wasim Ajmal during a meeting of the Peace Committee at District Council Hall the other day. He said it was duty of religious scholars to preach brotherhood, peace and tolerance among various sects. He said security had been tightened at all the 332 Eidgahs across the district and people would be searched through walkthrough gates and metal dictators. He said that the Home Department had ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at Main Bazaar and shopping centres and traders should install them through funds collected from shopkeepers.



Journalist grieved

LAHORE: Imam-un-Nisa, the mother of veteran journalist Zafar Alam Sarwar, was laid to rest at Miani Sahib Graveyard here on Wednesday night, says a press release. She was 96. The deceased was the widow of M. Abdul Rahim Saqi, who established a well-known newspaper ‘Zam Zam’ in 1937 and the Students Own Book Depot in 1930, still a reputed educational publishing organisation of Lahore. The deceased had been active during the freedom movement. She has left behind four sons, of whom Akbar Alam served for a number of years as chief news editor at daily ‘Jang’ in Lahore, until he joined the daily ‘Waqt’ owned by the Jang Group. He is still associated with the newspaper. One of her grandsons Talib Fareedi is working as a senior reporter in an Urdu newspaper and news channel.
