SL helicopter crash kills 4
COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan air force helicopter crashed into a jungle during a training exercise on Friday killing all four people aboard, a military spokesman said. The MI-24 helicopter went down near the town of Buttala, about150 miles southeast of Colombo, Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said. The pilots reported a mechanical problem before the crash, he said.
Boat sinks off French island
MAMOUDZOU, Mayotte: Thirty people were missing Thursday after a boat carrying them from the Comoros broke up in rough seas on its way towards the French Indian Ocean island Mayotte, French officials said.Eleven people were rescued from the large dug-out canoe that went down on Monday while carrying Comorans hoping to illegally enter French territory. The survivors — who include a pregnant woman, two teenagers and a people-smuggler — had clung to pieces of the canoe after the vessel split in two in heavy seas, said the officials in the Mayotte capital Mamoudzou. They were spotted by a fishing vessel which alerted authorities in Mayotte, which lies between northern Madagascar and northern Mozambique off the east coast of Africa.
Four killed in US
JUPITER, Florida: A manhunt is under way in Florida for a relative of three adults and a child shot to death during a Thanksgiving night family gathering. Police said on Friday that 17 relatives were inside the home when the shootings were reported around 10 pm in Jupiter, a small coastal town about 145-km north of Miami. Police say they’re looking for a 35-year-old cousin of the 6-year-old victim. It wasn’t immediately clear what may have led to the shootings. Authorities say a fifth victim is being treated at a hospital.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s electoral office said on Friday that presidential elections would be held on January 26, with President Mahinda Rajapakse expected to face his former military chief Sarath Fonseka. “Elections will be held on the 26th of January,” Dayananda Dissanayake, the commissioner of elections, told AFP by telephone.
Shirin Ebadi
TEHRAN: Iran has frozen bank accounts belonging to rights activist Shirin Ebadi and confiscated her Nobel Peace Prize medal in a bid to pressure the critic of the Islamic regime, colleagues said on Friday. Ebadi, who won the prize in 2003 for her outspoken democracy and human rights campaign, was undeterred despite urging the international community to act against Iranian “abuses” while she is abroad, her fellow activists said.
