PCB asked to put constitution in place
Thursday, November 26, 2009
By our correspondent

KARACHI: A subcommittee of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Sports on Wednesday recommended that the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Sports Ministry to put the PCB constitution in place within the next two months.

The Subcommittee held a meeting at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore with its convener Saud Majeed, in the chair. It recommended that the PCB and the Sports Ministry should finalise their work on the Board constitution by January 31, 2010.

Zakir Khan, PCB’s Director international cricket operations, made a presentation in which the various aspects of the national team’s performance were presented.

Sultan Rana, Director of domestic cricket Operations, made a comprehensive presentation on the state of the domestic game in Pakistan. The efforts of the PCB at various levels such as U-17, U-19, and senior level were presented to the committee. Changes made by the PCB in the format of various domestic competitions were discussed and future plans to improve the domestic game were also presented.

Haroon Rasheed, Director National Cricket Academy, made a presentation highlighting the achievements of the academy in preparing players for the various Pakistan teams. Details of the future plans to improve the training of players in different aspects of the game using modern sports methodology were also outlined.

The PCB finance department made a presentation to the subcommittee covering the period up to June 2008. The subcommittee members raised numerous queries and asked PCB to provide responses on Thursday (today) — the final day of the meeting.

Our correspondent adds from Islamabad: the members raised questions on the Board’s criteria for the appointment of Chief Operating Officer (COO) and also instructed the PCB to furnish the fact about the financial success of the Pakistan-New Zealand one-day series held in UAE.

One of the vocal members of the committee, MNA Iqbal Ahmad Khan, was critical of the PCB regarding the appointment of the COO without publicising the post. “No applications were invited for the post while appointing the new COO recently. The post should have been advertised and all the interested should have been allowed to apply for the post.”

The PCB officials, however, said that since Wasim Bari who was appointed against the post was already working in the board, he was given preference. “We are not satisfied with the reasons given by the board,” Iqbal Ahmad Khan said.

Meanwhile, the MNA also stressed on the PCB official to furnish the details of the Pakistan-New Zealand one-day series held at the start of the year. “Every board’s effort should be to take maximum profit from the series. How much the PCB has earned from that engagement is yet to be established,” he said.

The subcommittee also recommended that PCB and the Ministry of Sports in consultation with the committee finalise their work on the PCB Constitution by 31st January 2010.
