23 special persons for jobs

LAHORE
THE Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) has recommended 23 candidates to the provincial government for appointment to the posts of lecturer male (reserved for disabled persons) in various subjects in the Punjab Education Department. A PPSC press note on Tuesday said the Commission also cleared 413 candidates for interview for recruitment to 80 posts (including two posts reserved for disabled persons) of Social Welfare Officer/Medical Social Officer/Medical Social Worker (BS-17) in the Social Welfare, Women Development & Baitul Maal Department.
127 prisoners freed

ADDITIONAL District and Sessions Judge Abdul Majid on Tuesday, during his visit to both Central Jail Kot Lakhpat and District Jail Ichhra before Eid-ul-Azha, freed 127 prisoners involved in minor offenses on personal surety bounds. During his visit, AD&SJ released 108 prisoners from district jail Ichhra while 19 prisoners from central jail Kotlakhpat on personal sureties. The AD&SJ also inspected the food and medical facilities at both jails and directed the jails’ authorities to improve all these facilities for the prisoners.
Girl handed over to mother

LAHORE
THE District and Sessions Court on Tuesday handed over a girl to the mother after getting her recovered from her father’s custody. The recovery orders were issued by the district and sessions court on a habeas corpus petition filed by detenue’s mother Sahris Bibi, a resident of Gulshan Ravi, alleging that her husband Muhammad Ali, a resident of Lower Mall, had been keeping her four-month-old daughter Samiya in his illegal custody for the last few days. She further stated in her petition that her husband had kicked her out of his house after severely beating and snatched her daughter. The court directed the Lower Mall police to recover the minor girl. Later, the Lower Mall police produced her in the court where the court handed over her custody to the mother.
Distinction
The students of Punjab Colleges attained top positions in all the eight education boards of Punjab. The distinguished students were entitled to total cash prizes of Rs 23.6 million and heads of their institutions received Rs 11.8 million. Teachers and students of the Punjab Colleges praised the education-friendly policies of the Punjab chief minister.
Notice of unavailability of court tickets

LAHORE
LAHORE High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif on Tuesday, taking suo motu of non-availability of the court fee tickets of lower denomination, called report from the district officer (revenue), Lahore. The Chief Justice directed the revenue officer to submit a detailed reply within two days. The Chief Justice took a suo motu on news reports, indicating acute shortage of revenue tickets in Lahore. Due to shortage of tickets of one, two and three rupees denominations, people were compelled to purchase the tickets of higher price for use in legal documents.
Two PhDs

THE Punjab University awarded PhDs to two students in different subjects on Tuesday. According to a press statement, Shahid Atiq has been awarded PhD in Solid State Physics after approval of his thesis “Preparation of Giant Magnetic Materials of Iron Nitride Related Compounds.” Tasneem Rehman has been awarded a PhD in Urdu after approval of her research thesis.
Lecture on copyright

URDU Science Board (USB) on Tuesday organised a special lecture to create awareness among creative writers, artists, publishers and booksellers about importance of copyright. Deputy Registrar/In charge of the Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO) Imtiaz Ali delivered the lecture and advised the writers and publishers to register their literary, artistic and creative work with the IPO. USB Director General Iqbal Nabi Nadeem said Pakistan was the member of World Copy Treaty, adding under this treaty the signatory countries were responsible for the protection of copyrights of each other.
Insect resistant cotton seed

AFTER several years of research and development, the Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology, Punjab University, has finally developed two varieties of cotton seed containing traits of insect resistance. According to a press statement, these varieties have been approved by the National Bio-Safety Committee, Pakistan Environment Protection Agency, Ministry of Environment, Islamabad, in its 7th meeting held on November 23. Dr Tayyab Husnain, Professor, CEMB, presented the case and the committee approved two varieties with a lot of appreciation and pride. This is the first time in the history of Pakistan that genetically modified plant varieties were developed indigenously and approved by the government of Pakistan. CEMB-01 variety contains single gene while CEMB-02 contains double Bt genes which give excellent protecti0on against lepidopteron insects. These varieties will be available to farmers for cultivation for the next crop season after approval of the Punjab Seed Council, whose meeting is scheduled to be held in February, 2010.
Fusion music

THE Shakir Ali Museum organised a unique musical evening, which enthralled the audience with a rare taste of a true fusion of eastern and western classical music along with a dash of contemporary popular music on Tuesday evening. The event was named “A dialogue and musical evening ‘Bethak’, with Ustad Dilshad Hussain, Ustad Summer Hussain and the young singer Nouman Javaid. The latter recently got a big break with his hit song in India ‘Durd-e-Tanhai Mae’. The event was a highly enlightening journey into the worlds of eastern and western classical music conducted by world renowned Pakistani Maestro Ustad Dilshad Hussain Khan of Delhi Gharana , the son of Ustad Nawab Ali and nephew of Naushad.
