KHAIRPUR: The District Coordination Officer Sukkur distributed sugar among the citizens on fair price.
The DCO Sukkur Abdul Majeed Pathan got established Fair Price Stalls for sugar and provided the sweetener to citizens at Rs40/kg.
In local markets sugar is selling at Rs65/kg. Sindh government had committed to provide sugar at rupees Rs40/kg but failed to provide relief to the people. Sugar at Rs40/kg is only available at stalls run by the government and the Utility Stores Corporation.
The government was unable to cow down the sugar mill owners and instead it is buying expensive sugar from the mills and selling it at Rs40/kg to save its face. The price deferential between the ex-mill price and Rs40 is going out of the taxpayer pocket.
The long queues in front of utility stores have not waned though a fresh cane crop is ready to hit the markets. People of Khairpur and Sukkur allege that the monopoly of sugar mill owners was more influential than the government agencies.
