A new intelligence component Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) was constituted in the metropolis to counter terrorism by collecting information about terror outfits and miscreants active in the city, police said on Monday.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Kaleem Imam, when connected by The News, said that the Special Branch of the Islamabad Police would assist the CIU in criminal information collection. He said that SSP Tahir Alam Khan would head the newly-established intelligence component.
The IGP said that police commandoes and personnel of the Elite Force would raid the hideouts of criminals on information provided by the CIU. He added that a contingent of 45 commandoes would remain alert in police line headquarters to act on the information provided by the CIU.
He said that in addition to the setting up of the CIU, commandoes and personnel of the Elite Force were deputed at sensitive intersections to counter any act of terrorism. Police personnel were already checking vehicles at all roads of the capital. Policemen, riding 72 motorcycles and 12 vehicles, were patrolling the city roads round the clock.
The IGP announced the establishment of the CIU in a meeting, which was attended by DIG (Operations) Bin Yameen, DIG (Headquarters) Kamal-ul-Din Tipu, SSP (Operations) Tahir Alam Khan, SSP (Headquarters) Muhammad Zubair Hashmi, SSP (Traffic) Dr. Moeen Masood, AIG (Special Branch) Tariq Masood Yasin and all SPs, DSPs and SHOs.
The IGP said that police would take action after getting any specific information about criminals and all police stations of Islamabad would be attached with the unit. He said that police commandoes have been deputed at sensitive points, while horse-riding policemen have been directed to patrol in greenbelts.
He said that the Special Branch has established the unit to counter various challenges, including terrorism. He said that police commandoes would be deputed at sensitive locations and one ATS qualified squad would remain ready for rescue operation in case of any emergency. Policemen, including commandoes, have been deputed in the vicinity of schools, colleges, Blue Area, Peshawar Morr, T-Cross, IJP Road, F-8 Markaz, Shaheen Chowk and other sensitive points, he added.
The IGP said that police patrolling would be made more effective and police pickets have been erected for random checking in the city. He asked police officials to brief their subordinates to remain alert in their jurisdictions and enhance liaison with notables of their respective areas and members of vigilance committees.
