ISLAMABAD: Former minister Anwar Saifullah Khan said on Monday that he would move the court against the NAB authorities under defamation charges for naming him as one of the NRO beneficiaries.
Addressing a press conference at the National Press Club here, Anwar claimed that the NAB authorities had tried intentionally to damage his reputation. Anwar Saifullah, a PPP member of the NWFP Assembly, said he had never submitted an application seeking relief under the NRO.He asked the government to form a National Truth and Reconciliation Commission, so that all the issues, pertaining to the false cases registered against politicians for political victimisation, could be addressed.
Anwar said six cases had been registered against him by the authorities under the charges of misuse of powers, however, the superior courts had acquitted him in all those cases. “I was the first politician from the NWFP, who was arrested by the authorities after General Musharraf took over in 1999, without any warrants. Later, I was told that I had been taken into custody under the cases registered by the Farooq Leghari regime. When I told them that I was awarded bail in all those cases, a new case was registered to keep me in detention,” he added.
“I was charged for providing employment to the unemployed youth from all the four provinces, from BPS 1-14, under the PPP policy of more employment opportunities for the poor and I am proud of what I did for the people from the ignored and under-privileged classes. However, not a single case was registered for corruption against me,” Anwar said.
He said he had bravely faced his trial and was kept in jail for one-and-a-half years. “During this period, not a single time I requested for relief or an admission to some hospital for rest. Moreover, the courts acquitted me in all the cases registered against me. Later, the NAB authorities went into appeals, which were pending with the courts till April 2008,” he added.
“After the NRO was unveiled, the NAB withdrew all its appeals, as there was no material in those appeals against me. However, the Ministry of Law should have checked the cases of all the politicians rather than making public the NAB-approved list,” he added.
