Khawaja Hoti calls for mid-term elections
Monday, November 23, 2009
Our correspondent

Islamabad

Disgruntled legislator of Awami National Party Nawabzada Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti has said that mid-term elections are the only solution to the present crisis, as the masses are fed up with the present rulers.

He was replying to a question during a press conference here at National Press Club on Saturday.

He said Mian Nawaz Sharif was talking about saving the democratic system in the country but the people were fed up with the present rulers. “The only solution is to hold mid-term elections in the country otherwise there would be people’s revolution,” he said.

He questioned the silence of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) over corruption and malpractices in NWFP Works and Services Department despite a complete investigation.

“It is surprising that despite complete investigation carried out by the NAB in the affairs of the NWFP Works and Services Department, it kept the whole scam under the carpet,” he said.

He said the NWFP chief minister had kept Works and Services department with him and had turned it into a hub of corrupt practices.

He appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan and chairman NAB to take notice of rising corruption in the NWFP government so that the real culprits could be exposed.

Hoti said the federal government had established ERRA for rehabilitation of earthquake victims of the NWFP and Azad Kashmir.

The NAB had conducted investigations into misappropriation and corruption by the provincial head of the ERRA, Nasir Azam Khan, but so far no action had been taken against him, he said.

He said the federal government had provided Rs5 billion to provincial chapter of the ERRA, while hefty aid was received from the international donors. There were complaints of the corrupt practices on which the NAB conducted the inquiry. “But it is surprising that the NAB has so far taken no action on it,” he added.

Hoti said the NWFP government had stopped computerisation of the revenue record of the province.
