| Who will define ‘national interest’? |

Though I agree with Dr Irfan Zafar on the issues raised by him in his letter “National interests” (November 19) relating to the violations of the constitution of Pakistan and trampling of human rights by Pervez Musharraf, yet there are certain unresolved questions in my mind. First, how should a government react when at the behest of a tribal sardar, gas installations are bombed and the militia is attacked without any provocation on the part of the government? Second, whether the government should negotiate with tribal sardars if their demand is the unconditional withdrawal of the armed forces, the revival of an absolute sardari rule and the total collapse of the government’s writ?
Third, what course of action should a government adopt when the students of a madressah illegally occupy a children’s library, kidnap police officials and establish their own ‘court’ to prosecute the citizens? Lastly, is going by the book the only way to counter mutiny against the state and acts of terrorism? Let me reiterate that I don’t condone the actions of Pervez Musharraf, but would like to be educated as to which alternate courses of action could have been adopted by Musharraf.
