YANGON, Myanmar: Pakistan under-18 hockey team is all set to unleash its goal-scoring prowess when it will meet Malaysia in the final of Boys’ U-18 Asia Cup here on Sunday (today).
The title clash between Pakistan, Malaysia will start at 3.30pm (2.00pm PST). Malaysia’s Sultan Azlan Shah will be the chief guest for the final. Before the final, Japan will be facing strong Korea in a play-off for the third place.
It may be noted here that the winner of the Boys’ U-18 Asia Cup will qualify for the Youth Olympics being held in Singapore next year. Pakistan’s young team has a clear edge over Malaysian opponents in many ways. So far Pakistan have netted 23 goals in four games as compared to Malaysia’s 18. Pakistan have also won all their matches while Malaysia suffered defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the last league match.
Khawaja Junaid, the head coach and manager of the Pakistan junior team while talking to ‘The News’ on Saturday said that “we are going to play the decisive match of the tournament with a positive frame of mind. It could be any body’s game. Though we have already played against Malaysia and defeated them, we won’t take them lightly. Malaysia are likely to field the same side with which they played Junior World Cup last year but we are confident of our victory.”
