ASWJ sets Thursday deadline to arrest culprits
Sunday, November 22, 2009
By our correspondents

Karachi

Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), (banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan), has issued deadline for Thursday for the arrest of the culprits who killed the party’s general secretary Engineer Ilyas Zubair and spokesman Qari Shafiq-ur-Rehman, failing which they would announce future course of action.

The deadline was given by Senior Vice-President, Mohammed Fayyaz, after the funeral of the deceased on Saturday afternoon at the Dalmiya graveyard.

The funeral which was taken out from the party headquarters was heavily guarded by the police, Rangers and elite force. Throughout the funeral procession, the activists shouted slogans against the government, alleging that it had given protection to the enemies of Sipah-e-Sahaba and blamed the Shia activists for the killings.

Fayyaz termed the incident as tragic and held the government responsible in failing to maintain law and order in the city. Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Nadeem, Khateeb Siddiqi-e-Akber Masjid offered Namaz-e-Janaza which was largely attended by the activists of the party.

Meanwhile, tension gripped entire city, especially New Karachi, North Karachi, Shah Faisal Colony and Malir areas following the assassination of banned SSP leaders and heavy contingents of police and Rangers were deployed all over the city to thwart any untoward incident. Vehicular traffic and business activities were affected in some areas of the city and streets wore a deserted look.

Following the incident, sectarian graffiti was seen in many parts of the city, but to the surprise of many, unusual security measures were adopted by the law enforcers to prevent sectarian rift being created in the city. Additionally, no FIR was registered till the filling of this story.
