Naheed asks NRO beneficiaries to step down
Friday, November 20, 2009
By our correspondent

LAHORE: PPP leader Naheed Khan has urged the federal ministers who had benefited from the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) to step down in the larger interest of the party.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Naheed said the NRO beneficiaries holding ministerial offices should resign and the MNAs should present themselves for accountability.

Responding to a question, Naheed said the vacuum created after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto would take centuries to fill. She said the government should play its role in addressing the grievances of the people.

She said the government reinstated most of the employees, who were employed during the second tenure of Benazir Bhutto as prime minister. She said any bureaucrat creating hurdles in its way must be dismissed.

Dr Safdar Abbasi said the decision of the government to table the NRO in parliament and then backtracking on the issue was a setback for the party. He said the controversial amendments, including 17th and 58-2b, need to be repealed as it was the desire of Benazir who signed the CoD.

Answering a query about an in-house change in parliament, he said this perception wasn’t right as the PM was elected unanimously.

Replying to a question about the probe into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, he said the delay in investigation of the incident could create depression among the party workers. He said despite the fact that two years had passed, the investigation had not been completed and it was a matter of concern.
