President, PM messages on International Children’s Day
Govt pursuing child rights agenda, says Zardari; Gilani for protecting children against violence

Friday, November 20, 2009
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has said the government is implementing a National Plan of Action for Children that mainly focuses on child education, health and protection, and pushing forward the child rights agenda for substantial reforms.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the government was fully cognisant of its responsibilities to protect children against violence, child labour, gender-based abuses, hunger and malnutrition.

In a message on the Universal Children’s Day on November 20, the president said the task of child protection required partnership between the public and private agencies. He called for the civil society, NGOs, volunteers, philanthropists, international development partners, media and corporate sector in general and the children themselves in particular to come forward and play their role in ending the violence against children.

Meanwhile, the prime minister said in his message: “We understand that the future of Pakistan lies with our children. Our government will ensure that all the laws, policies and programmes are in consonance with the child rights perspectives.”

He said Pakistan being one of the pioneers of the world summit for children, joined the world community in celebrating the Universal Children’s Day with a renewed pledge and determination to safeguard the rights of children.

“Our country always remained in the forefront to advocate the child rights agenda and played a role at regional and world levels to project the rights of the child,” he said.
