A function comprised recitation of holy verses, Naat, speeches, poems, skits and Dua-e-Said was held on Wednesday to pay homage to poet and philosopher Allama Iqbal on the occasion of his 132nd birthday under the aegis of Hamdard Naunehal Assembly Karachi Chapter at a local hotel.
Speaking on the occasion, President Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, Sadia Rashid, said that Iqbal wanted to see the qualities of eagles in youth in order to fly high in the skies in the age of tough competition in every walk of life.
“Social and economic progress of the country depends on youth’s mental, educational and physical capacities and if a society does not take care of it, it remains backward and deprived”, she said, adding, efforts to make new generation in line with aspiration of Iqbal are not made in Pakistan.
According to the Pakistan Education Statistics, there are nearly 70 million children and youngsters between the ages of five and 19 in Pakistan and 42 million of them are not in any kind of school, representing 60 per cent of all kinds in that group, she lamented and further said, “We are far behind than Ethiopia, Ghana and Mali the poorest countries of the world, in the educational field. ‘Education for All’ has become a mere slogan in our country,” she said, adding that “As suggested by Hakim Said, our slogan should be purposeful and quality education for all and necessary steps towards this direction be taken immediately.”
Chief Guest and renowned poet, Fatima Hasan, while addressing the gathering of children said that Iqbal in his well-known poem described the mission of Satan (Iblees) to misguide human beings. But now he did not need to bother about his work as his duty was being performed by some misguided people, she said, adding, I am glad that the child speakers have condemned the satanic thinking and acts in their speeches.
Paying tribute to Hakim Said, she said that from the very beginning she was inspired by the personality and ideas of Hakim Said.
Hakim Said’s mission is great and true and I hope that these children will continue his mission, she added.
Deputy Director Programmes Hamdard, Hakim Mohammad Usman, urged the teachers to take care of the pronunciation of the Urdu words and teach children to utter them in a correct way.
Child speakers Khizer Khan, Kehkashan Anjam, Sobia Rizwan, Faizan Ahmed, Mohammad Osama Baig, Angbeen Mushtaque and Ali Hasan also spoke and paid great homage to Iqbal. They said that Hakim Said was also a Shaheen of Iqbal as he did not leave hope and struggle throughout his life. Children of Hamdard Public School and Hamdard Village School offered Dua-e-Said.
