KARACHI: Medium pacer Samiullah Khan Niazi took six for 32 to shepherd Group A leaders Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to a 73-run victory over Habib Bank Limited (HBL) while WAPDA ousted Karachi Whites by one wicket on Wednesday in matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy held in different cities of the country.
At the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad, chasing 253, Habib Bank’s batsmen failed to show enough resistance against the Mianwali-born pacer Samiullah, perishing on 179. Kamran Hussain (59) and opener Shan Masood (29) were the prominent batsmen. With the match-wining six wickets’ haul, Samiullah Niazi finished with seven wickets in the show while his fellow paceman Asad Ali took two, ending with nine.
The win stretched SNGPL’s points to 48 while Habib Bank slipped to the second place with 42 points.
SNGPL scored 245 and 256 while Habib Bank posted 249 and 179.
Meanwhile, here at the NBP Sports Complex, wicketkeeper batsman Ahmed Said and tail-ender Azharullah batted smartly to provide an unbelievable one wicket win to WAPDA against Karachi Whites. Chasing 259 to win, WAPDA resumed their second innings on 152 for six and achieved the target with one wicket still in hand. Ahmad Said, who was batting on 48 on the third day, hit 73 with eight fours while Azharullah in the end scored unbeaten 35.
Malik Aftab took three while Tabish Khan and Misbah Khan shared two wickets each for Karachi Whites. Tabish finished with eight wickets in the match.
Islamabad overwhelmed Peshawar by 37 runs at the National Cricket Ground in Islamabad. Chasing 393, Peshawar could score 355. Azam Jan hit 115 with ten fours and a six. Rauf Akbar and Imad Wasim clinched four wickets each.
Islamabad scored 256 and 292 while Peshawar scored 156 and 355.
At the Marghzar Ground in Islamabad, ZTBL beat Customs by 26 runs to take their points to 24 from six matches. Chasing 330, Customs resumed their second innings on five for one and were dismissed on 303. Ramiz Aziz (87) and Haifz Asad Baig (77) were the distinguished scorers. Muhammad Khalil grabbed four for 68, finishing with five in the match while Kashif Daud clinched two, ending with eight wickets. ZTBL posted 358 and 183 for eight declared while Customs scored 212 and 303.
Multan overpowered Abbottabad by seven wickets at the Gymkhana Ground in Okara to push their points to 26.
Chasing 231, Gulraiz Sadaf hit an excellent 118 to help Multan safely home after losing three wickets. Sadaf smashed 15 boundaries and two sixes in his excellent knock. Shahid Abbasi made 56 with seven cracking boundaries. Abbottabad scored 300 and 204 while Multan made 275 and 233 for three.
Sialkot inflicted a crushing 158 runs defeat on Rawalpindi at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Rawalpindi were reduced to 227 while chasing 385. Zahid Mansoor (60) and all-rounder Rashid Latif (30) were the main batsmen. Left-arm spinner Nayyar Abbas captured five for 37 while Naved Arif picked up three, finishing with six in the match.
Sialkot scored 107 and 493 while Rawalpindi made 215 and 227. The match between National Bank and KRL in Rawalpindi ended in a draw with the bankers taking three points.
KRL scored 353 and 272 for five while National Bank posted 398. Test cricketer Mohammad Wasim hit unbeaten 100 with 11 fours in KRL’s second innings. Lahore Shalimar also drew their match against SSGC at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore with SSGC grabbing three points. SSGC scored 42 and 183 for five declared while Shalimar made 307 and 219 for six.
Here at the National Stadium, Karachi Blues took 41 runs first innings lead when they bowled Faisalabad out for 360 in reply to their first innings total of 401.
Aamir Mehmood (78) and Zeeshan Asif (73) and Ijaz Ahmed (58) were the main scorers. Tariq Haroon clinched six for 127 for Karachi Blues. At close of third day, Karachi Blues were 81 for one in their second innings.
