 Dissidents demand reorganisation of PPP
Accuse party ministers of corruption, seek their accountability

Thursday, November 19, 2009
Syed Bukhar Shah

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) dissidents have demanded reorganisation of the party from ward to provincial level, holding of party convention and formation of study circles by the party intellectuals according to the traditions set by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

The district presidents, general secretaries and about 40 office-bearers of different party organisations and wings also attended the meeting late Tuesday.

Sources told The News that 60 leaders addressed the meeting wherein all the participants were unanimous in their complaints against the reported corrupt practices of the party’s ministers.

In a unanimous resolution, the meeting demanded accountability of all the party ministers in the presence of the honest and ideological workers besides changing their portfolios. “Since corruption within the party is at its peak, a proper accountability system should be put in place,” one of the speakers asked the leadership.

In another resolution, the participants demanded 20,000 jobs for the workers in the NWFP. They also accused the ministers of distributing development funds and jobs among their near and dear ones.

“One of the party MNAs usurped Rs520 million development fund and 200 services and Kalashnikov permits,” said a resolution, demanding immediate transfer of the brothers of the party leaders from important posts.

Some of the elected representatives, a resolution said, were involved in preparing fake cards for internally displaced persons (IDPs), which had also created law and order problem in the province. They also asked for investigation into the appointments in Nadra and large-scale postings and transfers in the PPP related ministries. The involvement of party MNAs and ministers, it said, had earned a bad name for their party.

The PPP workers demanded replacement of Faryal Talpur, saying such important offices should be run by a senior and sincere leader, like Raza Rabbani. “The first phase of our protest movement against the party leadership, ministers and MNAs will continue for 100 days and later we will start protest in Islamabad in the second phase,” sources quoted the leaders as saying.

The dissidents will announce their future line of action on November 24. The leaders will visit all divisions and districts to take workers into confidence and hold provincial convention at Nishtar Hall in Peshawar after Eidul Azha.

A six-member committee comprising Usman Ali Khan, Ijaz advocate, Saeed Ahmad Khan, Syed Tahir Abbas, Ayub Shah and Khwaja Yawar Naseer was formed to prepare documents and arrangements for study circles.

Another committee comprising Azam Afridi, Raham Badshah Sherpao, Afsarul Mulk, Javed Akhtar, Taimur Khattak and Mazhar Ali Shah was constituted to prepare a white paper against “corrupt ministers” for distribution after Eidul Azha.
