Aali Bugti running a private jail: Ahmadan
Wednesday, November 18, 2009
By Mumtaz Alvi

ISLAMABAD: A prominent elder of the Bugti tribe on Tuesday accused the tribe chief Mir Aali Bugti of running a private jail.

Mir Ahmadan Bugti, who is also a cousin of late Nawab Akbar Bugti and a Member of the National Assembly, alleged the self-styled chieftain was also impeding payment of salaries to the Levies, teachers, dispensers and other low-grade employees in Dera Bugti. “The poor employees are told to see Mir Aali Bugti and get a chit from him before any payment is made to them,” he charged. Ahmadan Bugti, in an informal chat with The News here at the Parliament Lodges, said before the implementation of the proposed Balochistan package, the private jail, which he billed as a state within a state, should be done away with.

The legislator, along with a delegation of people from Dera Bugti, met Interior Minister Rehman Malik the other day and raised the issue with him. He told Rehman Malik that measures should be taken urgently to rid the people of the area of lawlessness and exploitation. “The minister informed us that he had talked to the Balochistan chief secretary and some other officials and the issue will be resolved shortly,” Ahmadan Bugti said, when asked what the minister’s response to their concerns was.

Asked how he knew about the jail and other issues, he said he was a resident of Dera and those accompanying him were directly affected by, what he called, the persistent lawlessness there. He said they had dispatched complaints to the president and the prime minister as well.

Replying to anther question, the lawmaker was of the view that if the authorities stopped backing certain elements, lawlessness would automatically end. “If you stop backing and supporting unwanted elements, then there will be no complaints against anyone,” he contended.

He said he had also explained the entire situation to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, when he chaired a meeting of Balochistan’s parliamentarians on Monday. The prime minister, he added, reiterated his government’s commitment to ridding Balochistan of deprivation. However, Ahmadan Bugti emphasised the Centre should not only take cognizance of the matter but also take immediate steps to rectify the situation. Balochistan Home Minister Zafar Zahri and Mir Aali Bugti’s comments could not be obtained.
