PESHAWAR: Security is still a major concern for the educational institutions in the provincial metropolis as almost all the public and private organisations have taken special measures to avoid any untoward incident in the wake of the growing terrorist attacks.
After the reopening of the schools, the district administration and the provincial government had asked the school managements, both private and government-run, to take special measures to boost security.
The district coordination officer Sahibzada Anees said the schools had been asked to ensure proper checking of the students, teachers and other visitors. Directives were issued that the security guards of every school should be equipped with metal detectors and other necessary equipment, while closed-circuit cameras were to be installed at the main entrance and surrounding walls of the institutions.
Some private schools enhanced their monthly fees in the name of security measures triggering serious concern among parents, who had already reservations over the closure of the schools for about a month due to security threats.
The heads of the universities on the university campus Peshawar met several times to discuss ways and means for protection of the campus housing four universities, several colleges and schools besides residential colonies for the staff of different institutions.
To address the security concerns, several gates of the university were shut, barricades were erected and security personnel at the remaining gates were increased. The entry of private vehicles into the campus was banned. A sticker issued by the campus coordination committee was made necessary for the vehicles entering the campus.
A special meeting on security was held at the Peshawar Public School and College, Warsak Road on Tuesday. It was informed that special service cards were to be issued to all the employees including teaching staff while record of the private vehicles involved in pick and drop would be preserved for safety purposes.
Special discipline committee was formed which would oversee the security arrangements during opening and closing of educational institutions. It would keep a vigil on entry of the private people and vehicles into the school premises. The committee would also take care of the hostels security.
Prof Tahir Naeemi would head the special discipline committee while Prof Riaz Azam was appointed head of the committee for student rights. The meeting also discussed academic matters. The principal said that cash prizes and commendation certificates would be given to those faculty members whose students showed excellent academic performance in the board examinations. Other government schools have also formed committees consisting of teachers for security reasons and have taken steps within their limited resources.
