Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Islamabad

A three-day national polio eradication campaign started on Monday throughout the country to immunise children under age of five years.

Country head Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) Dr. Altaf Bosan talking to APP said that around 33 million children will be vaccinated during the campaign started in all districts of the country.

He said the campaign activities are being monitored by more than 87,000 vaccination teams while 15,400 area supervisors and 2730 zonal supervisors are also participating in the drive. He added the main focus of the campaign was administering anti polio drops to children living in high-risk areas. He said polio vaccine being used in the country is safe and effective and is produced internationally while WHO has approved its quality. Dr. Altaf Bosan said the vaccine is the same that has been used in most parts of the world to eradicate polio including Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

He said UN agencies, partners, donor governments, the private sector and foundations have extended all possible support to ensure that the necessary resources are available to ensure making Pakistan polio free.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has appealed the parents to administer polio drops to their children for success of the campaign started for complete eradication of polio virus. It also asked community leaders, media persons, religious scholars, health workers and teachers to play their role in this regard for educating parents.
