 Symposium on gastro at PIMS

The Department of Gastroenterology at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), in collaboration with the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology (Islamabad Chapter), will organise a one-day clinical scientific symposium at the PIMS today (Monday).

The coordinator of the symposium is Head of Gastro Department Professor Dr. Tashfeen Adam. Two doctors of PIMS gastroenterology unit would present the rare cases seen in the gastro department. These are the cases, which are not usually seen in normal practice so the diagnosis is also very difficult and needs very sensitive investigations.

According to a spokesman of PIMS, the cases would be presented by Dr Adil Naseer and Dr Shahid Shabbir. All the renowned gastroenterologists, general physicians and faculty of PIMS would attend the session. The main aim of this meeting is to share the experience with other doctors and to educate junior doctors regarding the rare diseases of stomach, intestines and liver including hepatitis.

Dr Waseem Khawaja, physician department of gastroenterology told ‘The News’ that in the outpatient department of PIMS gastroenterology Department, daily 350 to 380 patients are treated suffering from various diseases of stomach and liver. “Thirty to fotrt per cent of these patients are suffering from various diseases of liver only including hepatitis B and hepatitis C while 70% of patients admitted in the gastroenterology ward are suffering from various complications of the hepatitis that is infections, bleeding from stomach and coma.

According to the spokesman, PIMS Executive Director Dr Altaf Hussain stated that in collaboration with the PIMS departments of public health and gastroenterology, a public health campaign regarding the causes, prevention and treatment of hepatitis would be launched with the help of media and this will help in educating the people regarding various diseases of gastrointestinal tract.

Professor Javed Aslam But said the Pakistan society of gastroenterology would continue to educate the young doctors so that they can better manage the complicated cases of liver and stomach. The research in the gastroenterology department of PIMS would also be published in international journals.
