Out of order fountains need attention
Monday, November 16, 2009

Rawalpindi

The fountains and sprinklers along Benazir Bhutto Road near Chandni Chowk are now filled with garbage and need immediate attention of the concerned authorities.

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has failed to change water in the fountain for the last one year. On the other hand, sanitary workers after cleaning the road put garbage in fountains and sprinklers.

According to sources, these fountains and sprinklers remained functional only for a few weeks after their installation, as the RDA did not make any arrangements for cleaning them.

Talking to ‘The News,’ motorists demanded of the concerned authorities to pay attention to things they had installed for enhancing the beauty of the city. They said that permanent staff should be deputed at these points to maintain them.

Junaid Ahmed, a motorist, said: “The government spends million of rupees on such projects every year, but no arrangements are made for their permanent maintenance and the money spent on them goes waste.”

When contacted by ‘The News,’ Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) Gardening Branch In-charge Sheikh Tariq Mehmood said: “After completion of ongoing renovation projects we have decided to clean and make all fountains and sprinklers that was constructed to enhance the beauty of the city functional.” He said that stoppage of maintenance work was also because of delay in funds.
