 PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan success termed
‘historic triumph’ of democracy

Monday, November 16, 2009
Karachi

Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister, Sharmila Farooqui, Provincial Ministers Shazia Marri, Begum Nargis ND Khan and Makhdoom Jameel Zaman have congratulated the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidates for winning elections with massive majority in Gilgit-Baltistan and termed it a ‘historic triumph’ of democracy which would bring a new era of development and prosperity in the region.

Farooqui said that formation of a new legislative assembly for the first time in Gilgit and Baltistan would be a new history and would bring prosperity, development and employment in the region.

“It was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (ZAB) who first of all started reforms in northern areas during his government era and the present PPP government under the dynamic leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have materialised the dream of the founder leader of PPP, Farooqui said.

She said that the formation of the first government in the tribal region would change the fate of the people and bring prosperity and development for them. The election of PPP candidates with massive success was an evidence of trust and confidence of the people reposed in them, she observed.

The adviser said that the elections had fulfilled long-standing demand of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, which would prove a milestone in the empowerment of the people of the area.

Farooqui said that the PPP had once again proved that it was the biggest political party of the country. The credit of a new political development in the region went to the party for ensuring autonomy to the people of this region. The PPP government would soon resolve the grievances of the deprived people of the region, she said.

She refuted the allegations of rigging in polls levelled against the PPP and said that they were baseless and concocted. “The massive victory of the PPP is the success of democracy and people of this region. The new government in this region would soon start focusing on the very serious political and economic and security issues and resolve them on priority basis, Farooqui concluded.

Shazia Marri congratulated the PPP candidates on behalf of the Sindh government and said that it was the success of democracy. She said that Shaheed ZAB promoted the historic tradition of democracy in the country and introduced the concept of one man and one vote.

She said that following the great examples of ZAB, the struggle for democracy was continued in democratic periods by the people of the country and this tradition was made stronger by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the mission of democracy went on.

The minister said that the decision of President Zardari to introduce political structure in Gilgit-Baltistan by giving it the status of a province had been admired by all the people.

Social Welfare Minister, Begum Nargis N.D Khan and Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination, Makhdoom Jameel Zaman, have termed the success of PPP candidates in Gilgit-Baltistan elections as a great confidence of the people in the leadership of President Zardari and the party.

They said that the PPP government would play their due role for progress of the people of this region. They said that the country was passing through a critical time and the present regime was using all its abilities to strengthen it.
