Miandad denies coaching offer reports
KARACHI: Former Pakistan skipper Javed Miandad denied reports that he has received offer to coach Pakistan cricket team. A local newspaper quoted sources in the board saying that most of the national players were unhappy with Intikhab Alam and the board’s top officials were now considering to appoint Miandad as the coach after the Test series against New Zealand. Miandad on Sunday said that he was always ready to serve the country but he hadn’t received any offer to coach Pakistan team. Miandad was PCB’s first choice as the Pakistan coach after chairman Ijaz Butt sacked Australian Geoff Lawson last October. However, at that time Miandad was unwilling to take the responsibility. He was later appointed the PCB’s director general.
Rajpal replaces Sandeep as captain
NEW DELHI: Senior forward Rajpal Singh was named skipper of Indian hockey squad, replacing Sandeep Singh, for eight-nation FIH Men’s Champions Challenge I tournament in Salta, Argentina from December 6-13. The winner of tournament will qualify for next year’s elite Champions Trophy tournament. India are in Pool A with Belgium, China & New Zealand. Pool B consists of hosts Argentina, Pakistan, Canada & South Africa. India play first group match against New Zealand on December 6 followed by China on December 8 & Belgium on December 10. Final of the tournament will be played on December 13.
Zuhair cruises into semis
KARACHI: Favourite Syed Zuhair Raza secured his expected place in semifinals of U-17 singles event in Talent Hunt Sindh Ranking Tennis Championship after recording an immaculate 6-0, 6-0 win over Ahsan Mohammad here Sunday at CDGK Sports Complex. Zuhair also cruised into men’s quarters where he is the fourth seed. He thrashed Omer Usman recording a formidable 6-0, 6-1 win to confirm his place in men’s singles last-eight. His elder brother Syed Abbas Raza also entered into the quarters of men’s singles event. Seeded second in the event, Abbas trounced Muhammad Asim recording a 6-0, 6-1 triumph. Top seed Yasir Khan confirmed his presence in quarters with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Nawab Muzaffar.
PWLF courses begin today
KARACHI: Pakistan Weight Lifting Federation (PWLF) is organizing weight lifting coaching and technical course in collaboration with International Olympic Committee (IOC) here at PSB Sports Center from November from Monday (today).Qamar Iftikhar, an IOC Solidarity weightlifting coaching diploma holder from Hungary, will supervise this course. Hafiz Imran Butt, General Secretary, PWLF will help Qamar conduct the course. Around twenty selected coaches and technical officials from Sindh Province are expected to attend the course. Two sessions of two hours each would be conducted every day. The coaching and training course is scheduled to conclude on 20th November.
Hockey event from December 4
KARACHI: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is organising the second National Tray Hockey Championship from December 4-18 at the Sialkot Hockey Stadium, Sialkot. Eleven teams will take part in the event. The participating teams are Pakistan Railways, Pakistan Steel Mills, Police, PTV, Federal Territory, Customs, HEC, Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan. The Federal Territory team will consist of Islamabad, A. J & K, FATA, Gilgit and Baltistan and will be considered as one team. The teams are directed to confirm the team participation in the event by 25th November.
Qasim to monitor PHF elections
KARACHI: President Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Qasim Zia Sunday said he would monitor Federation’s elections process himself to ensure transparency. In a media statement, Qasim Zia said that the elections will be held under the policy of Pakistan Sports Board and there will be no compromise on rules laid by the PSB. “If we found any irregularity at any where, PHF will take strict action against the concerned authorities,” Qasim said.
