PM orders maximum help for Waziristan IDPs
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
By our correspondent

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has asked the concerned authorities to provide all possible assistance to save the internally displaced persons from undue hardship.

He has sought a detailed report about the complaints in the provision of assistance to the IDPs currently taking shelter in different areas of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), Balochistan and Punjab.

The prime minister has also spoken to the provincial chief ministers and urged them to visit the people who have been uprooted for the sake of the country. “The IDPs of Waziristan must be looked after the way the IDPs of Malakand and Swat were taken care of,” Gilani has asked.

Well-placed government sources in the federal capital told The News on Monday that the Gilani has instructed the authorities to dispatch winter clothing and ration in abundance for the affected people and ensure the prompt and judicious distribution of these items among them.

It has been observed that that the IDPs of Waziristan are not getting the attention of the non-governmental organisation (NGOs), the international as well local media, civil administration and the provincial governments. On certain occasions, the IDPs were roughed up by the police. The prime minister has taken serious notice of the situation and has asked the concerned authorities to treat the IDPs with respect.

The federal government on Monday dispatched truckloads of items of daily use to ensure uninterrupted supply of goods to the IDPs. The government has already released Rs2.5 billion for the IDPs.
