Widening of Canal Bank Road flayed
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
By Our Correspondent

LAHORE

IN an emergency meeting held on Monday, the Lahore Bachao Tehrik strongly condemned the proposed project of widening and remodeling of Canal Bank Road. Imrana Tiwana, Convener Lahore Bachao Tehrik, said the project was very harmful and dangerous for the environment of the city as well as posed serious health hazards to the citizens.

She said the project was already controversial and a case regarding this project was pending in the Lahore High Court. She said the Punjab government could not approve this project till the final decision.

She further said that a new Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) was required for the upgraded project but the government did not bother to follow the law. She claimed that the earlier EIA of the project was rejected by a large number of citizens in the public hearing and the officials of Environment Protection Department, TEPA and NESPAK ran away from the meeting without giving answers to the public questions.

She said LAHORE Bachao Tehrik would strongly react to this project and public rallies would be carried out to stop the Punjab government from executing this anti-environment project. She said that the project would only benefit nine per cent citizens who had their own cars while 91 per cent remaining citizens would have to bear its bad impacts.

She said that the meeting demanded the Chief Minister Punjab meet Lahore Bachao Tehrik to get a complete briefing regarding the negative impacts of this project. She also urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take a suo-motu of this project.
