The Senate Standing Committee on Culture and Tourism lauded and showed full support to the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in its struggle to revive performing arts in the country.
The committee, led by Senator Nilofer Bakhtiar, visited NAPA recently and evaluated the performance and shortcomings of the institution. In absence of NAPA Chairman Zia Mohiuddin, Director Programmes Arshad Mehmud briefed the committee about the courses being offered at the institute.
Mehmud explained that thus far, two batches had graduated from NAPA, and most graduates are doing well in their respective fields. NAPA Public Relations Officer (PRO) Nadeem Ahmed told The News that Senator Bakhtiar appreciated the efforts put in by veterans of the industry, and wanted more institutes to be built for the progress of arts and culture. The committee, however, expressed concern over the modest strength of female students at NAPA.
Ahmed added that NAPA officials stressed the need to develop affiliations with international art schools for better exposure of students — an idea wholeheartedly welcomed by the committee. The committee also urged the NAPA administration to visit Islamabad, and talk to different embassies regarding international education ventures.
