ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has appointed Shahid Bashir, senior joint secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, Pakistan’s permanent representative at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Shahid Bashir, a BPS-21 officer from the Customs and Excise Group, is currently posted at the Ministry of Commerce as senior joint secretary (foreign trade) and looking after trade issues pertaining to the South Asian region.
He is also the architect of all free trade agreements Pakistan has signed with friendly countries like China, Sri Lanka and Malaysia as well as South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) with regional countries of South Asia. He also contributed his input to preferential trade agreements (PTA) with other countries.
The post of Pakistan’s mission at the WTO has been lying vacant after the retirement of Dr Manzoor Ahmed, who has jointed Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The WTO’s ministerial conference, which is scheduled to be held from November 29 to December 3 at Geneva, will be led by the new appointee.
