LAHORE
Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has said the issue of the 17th Amendment will be resolved under the Charter of Democracy (CoD) and no one has lost or won over the issue of the National Reconciliation Ordinance.
The PM said he had invited the Pakistan Muslim League-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif to discuss the Balochistan issue, and a constitutional package would soon be presented in the parliament in this regard. Gilani was talking to media persons at the residence of Pakistan People’s Party Central Executive Committee member Ch Muhammad Aslam Gill on Sunday where he had gone to express condolence over the death of host’s mother.
Regarding the NRO, Gilani said the government had decided to table the ordinance in the parliament as directed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
He said the decision was, however, withdrawn after political parties opposed the idea. He added that the NRO was not a matter of winning or losing of any party but part of reconciliatory politics of the government in larger national interest.
Regarding the Kerry-Lugar Law, he said it was legislation made in the United States, and not in Pakistan, and what the government could do was either to accept it or reject the aid under the said law. PM Gillani also visited the residence of PML-N MNA Tehmina Daultana to express condolences over the death of her husband. He also visited the residence of Asif Hashmi, chairman, Evacuee Property Trust Board (EPTB), to congratulate him on the marriage of his son Faraz Hashmi.
APP adds: Prime Minister Gilani has said the PPP-led government will continue its policy of complete independence for media.
He was talking to Governor Punjab Salman Taseer who called on him at the State Guest House. “The strength of democratic institutions lies in the supremacy of parliament and an independent media for which the government was making an all-out effort,” he said. Prime Minister Gilani said, “The Pakistan Peoples Party has made sacrifices for the cause of democracy and it will continue its efforts to strengthen the root of democracy and democratic culture.” He said the government would continue its role for political reconciliation in the country, adding, political parties would be taken into confidence on all issues of national importance. “There is no system better than democracy to fight terrorism and extremism,” he added. The prime minister said governments at provincial and federal level were making utmost efforts to ensure protection of lives and property of citizens. The governor praised the efforts of the government for the promotion of political reconciliation, tolerance and democratic culture in the country. “Short and long term measures taken by the government to narrow the demand and supply gap for electricity in the country are of great importance,” the governor added. Salman Taseer expressed his confidence that the government would steer the country out of challenges on all fronts.
