Zahid Hussein of the Sustainable Resource Foundation (SuRF), Pakistan has been elected the president of the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP), says a press release issued here.
Zahid Hussein will take over from Prof Myung Hwan-Cho, the incumbent ASAP president, on December 1 for a two-year tenure.
He has more than two-decade experience of working in the national and international health sector. His active association with HIV/AIDS work has been consistent, long and diverse.
ASAP, the largest body in the Asia Pacific region for advocacy in the struggle against HIV/AIDS, is also the custodian of International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP). UNAIDS has been a major partner of ASAP for organising ICAAPs over the years. ASAP offices are in Sydney, Seoul and Bangkok.
ICAAP is the largest HIV/AIDS biennial event in Asia and the Pacific region and provides a forum to governments, civil society organisations, scientific bodies, scientists and social scientists, media and the community.
The 9th ICAAP was held in August this year in Bali (Indonesia) while the 11th ICAAP will be held in August 2011 in Busan (Republic of Korea).
