Slain Nazim honoured his word after renouncing militancy
Monday, November 09, 2009
By Javed Aziz Khan

PESHAWAR: It was a year back when Nazim of Adezai Union Council Abdul Malik promised in the Badaber Police Station not to support militants against the government, and he honoured his commitment till his death.

Suspected militants attacked a flag march of the Peshawar Police and Frontier Constabulary in Adezai on August 6 last year and the cops launched an operation in the area and arrested Abdul Malik for allegedly supporting the miscreants in carrying out attacks on security forces. It was alleged that the militants had opened fire on the police from the house of the Nazim.

Abdul Malik, in his early 50s and twice elected Nazim of the Adezai Union Council, remained in custody for one-and-half months before he swore on the Holy Quran in the Badaber Police Station on October 21 that he or his family would never support the militants in future. He promised in the presence of senior police officers and politicians that he would never support any group in carrying out attacks on security forces.

Malik was ultimately released but his promise angered the militants. They first warned him to end support to the government and later rained rockets at his residence on November 26 last year. This was just the beginning of his miseries.

Since then, the house, Hujra and vehicle of Abdul Malik came under attack for almost 20 times. Last year, a group of around 300 armed militants attacked his house with rockets and opened indiscriminate fire.

The villagers came out to help their Nazim. A bloody clash took place between the villagers and the attackers that resulted in the killing of at least seven people from both sides. Six of those wounded were family members of the Nazim.

The miscreants attacked his windmill in the village with a bomb. A bomb was planted in his Hujra while the house of his relatives were also bombed. Militants also blew up girls and boys schools in his constituency, forcing many parents not to send their children to local schools. The FC provided manpower and other facilities to the Nazim but he decided to raise a Qaumi Lashkar, a volunteer force against the militants.
