PBF all set to host BB International tourney
Sunday, November 08, 2009
KARACHI: Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) President Doda Khan Bhutto believes Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing tournament would be a great success and would pave the way for the return of international events to Pakistan.

Talking to PPI, Doda Khan said that PBF has almost completed the homework to host the mega event — having an expected expense of 60 million rupees.

“The winning team would receive a cash prize of US$ 5,000 while second placed team would cash US$ 3,000. This event will have all the glamour as any other international boxing tournament,” Doda said.

He further said that the tournament which would be contested in 11 weight categories would also be giving US$ 500 to every gold medallist, US$ 300 to silver medallists and US$ 200 to bronze medallists.

“Apart from these regular cash prizes — the best boxer of the event would bag a cash prize of US$ 2,500,” he added.

He informed that the federation had sent invitations to 57 countries and around 35 countries are expected to participate in the event.

“We have sent invitation to all the five zones and we expect that most of the countries would accept our invitation and come to participate in the event,” he said.

“Hopefully security wouldn’t be a big issue as our province has been peaceful. However, we have a security plan as a precaution which we will strictly adhere to. Inshallah everything will go well,” he said.

“This tournament will send a positive message to the world and soften the image of Pakistan. International events are very important for any sport to survive as the people are interested to see international players displaying their skills,” he explained.

The tournament is scheduled to begin from January 1 and would conclude on January 9. It will be hosted at Karachi Expo Centre.
