PESHAWAR: US Consul General Candace Putnam has assured Minister for Health Syed Zahir Ali Shah to assist the NWFP government in establishing a burn centre in the city and provide rescue kits to handle emergency situations.
The US diplomat, who called on the minister at the Health Secretariat, was apprised that the province had no burn centre and rescue kits to pull the bodies out of debris. Zahir Shah, also the PPP NWFP president, said the province was in the frontline in the ongoing war against terrorism. “This is not our war alone as terrorism is a challenge to the whole world,” he said, suggesting to the US diplomat to assist them by providing the required facilities in the hospitals.
“Presently, we are ill-equipped to face the challenges in case of emergencies,” he said, and reminded that all the available facilities in even the major hospitals were for normal situations. He said the medical infrastructure in Malakand division had been destroyed and needed to be reconstructed and improved.
Referring to the recent deadly blasts, which buried many people under the debris for several days, he said the rescue kits and cutters were needed to pull the bodies from the rubble.
The minister, however, appreciated government efforts for establishing peace and development in the province. He said the NWFP government was facing many challenges in different sectors, including peace and development, but he hoped to overcome them with public support.
He said though the government was doing well, it needed world support and co-operation to address various issues in the province. Candace Putnam assured to provide four collapsed structure rescue kits for emergency situation. She also promised to provide medicines to major hospitals including Lady Reading Hospital. She said the US had also reserved a huge amount for the rehabilitation and upgrading health facilities in Malakand division. She also assured to provide support for the development of Peshawar.
In a chat with The News, the PPP provincial president rejected the idea of national government, saying his party was smoothly running affairs of the country with its coalition partners. “There is no need of national government. We will complete our constitutional tenure,” he said.
