 Clarification
Saturday, November 07, 2009
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Industries & Production has said apropos the news item, “No home work ahead of WTO moot,” the correspondent’s concern is noted. However the following clarification is offered:

The Ministry of Industries and Production has a “WTO unit” that has been working on the Non-Agriculture Market Access negotiations and possible issues and implications for our industry since 2007. From time to time, the WTO unit has held seminars on critical WTO issues inviting stakeholders from the public as well as the private sector.

The Ministry of Industries and Production had to arrange about a dozen meetings to prepare our considered position item by item. Two seminars are planned in Karachi and Lahore. The response from the industry to participate in the sector- specific meetings was limited.

The Ministry of Industries and Production is represented on almost all the nine Working Groups constituted by the Ministry of Commerce - the coordinating Ministry for the WTO issues to undertake preparatory work for the 7th Ministerial Meeting. These Working Groups have been set up covering subjects such as NAMA (Non-Agricultural Market Access), Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs), Agriculture, Trade Facilitation, Services, Rules, Environment, Rules of Origin and Preferences for LDCs.
