HYDERABAD, India: Sachin Tendulkar's 175-run marathon innings went in vain as Australia won by three runs in the fifth ODI to go 3-2 up in the seven-match series at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here on Thursday.
Chasing 351, India were all out for 347 with two balls remaining as Praveen Kumar was run out on a throw from Nathan Hauritz. Sachin Tendulkar scored a stunning 175 en route to his personal milestone of crossing 17,000 ODI runs.
He and Suresh Raina (59) put on 137 for the fifth wicket but debutant Clint McKay struck the all-important blow for Australia when he had Tendulkar caught by Nathan Hauritz.
Sachin Tendulkar looked at his ominous best as he smashed the Aussie bowlers to all parts of the ground, completing his 45th ton in one-day cricket.
India lost a few quick wickets even as Sachin Tendulkar continued to torment the Aussies with his tremendous stroke play. Soon after losing the wicket of Sehwag, India suffered another blow as they lost Gautam Gambhir for 8.
Just when Virender Sehwag was looking at his best, a sudden rush of blood saw his untimely departure, leaving India a wicket down.
Sehwag was out for 38 after he tried to pull a delivery but just managed to top-edge it straight into the hands of Bollinger.
Earlier, riding on a majestic century by Shaun Marsh and whirlwind 93 by Shane Watson, Australia posted a target of 350/4 after they won the toss and elected to bat first on a placid batting track.
Shaun Marsh's tryst with India continued as he slammed his first ODI hundred in Hyderabad. After his success in IPL-08, he again chose Indian soil to show his talent. His run-a-ball 112 consisted of 8 fours and two brutal sixes.
Cameron White (57) and Mike Hussey (31*) took over once the Australians lost Marsh and took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners. White was more severe on the Indian bowlers and scored his 5th ODI fifty in style. They put together a scathing 43-ball 80-run partnership that helped them reach 350 in the end.
But, it was Shane Watson who took the attack to the opposition after some initial overs after starting cautiously.
After the cautious start, Shane Watson broke free and started hitting boundaries at will and completed his fifty in style. He took just 40 balls to reach his half century which contained 5 fours and 3 towering sixes.
Just as everybody was waiting for Watson's century, India finally got their first breakthrough as they removed rampaging Shane Watson for 93. Watson holed out at deep mid-wicket to Ravindra Jadeja off Harbhajan Singh.
Ricky Pointing played some magnificient shots and gave ample support to Marsh who then was batting at his best. But in trying to up the tempo, Ponting finally departed for run-a-ball 45, with three fours and a huge six. Ponting was deceived by Praveen Kumar's slower one which disturbed his stumps.
It was Praveen Kumar who was the only Indian bowler who bowled reasonably well on an unresponsive pitch.
