Doctors’ negligence claims two lives in Khairpur
Friday, November 06, 2009
By our correspondent

KHAIRPUR: Police on Thursday registered an FIR against two lady doctors of the Lady Wellington Hospital, whose negligence led to the death of a labour patient and her giving stillbirth.

Members of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) staged a protest, demanding the withdrawal of the FIR. Sources said Latifa Bhutto maintained in her complaint that her daughter, Saima, was hospitalised after her labour pain started.

The complainant said lady doctor Mukhtiar Solangi, who was on duty, did not examine Saima even after requests and went away, saying her duty was over. Another lady doctor Zahida Soomro, who resumed her duty, also did not attend Saima even after repeated requests. As a result, Saima gave birth to a dead child and she also died due to excessive bleeding.

The police said they had registered a case against lady doctors Zahida Soomro and Mukhtiar Solangi and further investigation was underway. The sources said the complainant approached MNA Nafisa Shah and narrated the story, informing her that the police were not registering her complaint against the doctors. The MNA asked the Khairpur DPO to ensure that an FIR was registered.

Meanwhile, the PMA, in its meeting, decided to protest against the registration of the FIR and demanded of the police to withdraw it. Doctors of the Civil Hospital and the Lady Wellington Hospital boycotted their duties and staged a demonstration, demanding the withdrawal of the FIR.
