An exhibition of photographs by eminent Pakistani photographer Azhar Sheikh opening today (Thursday) at Saidpur branch of Nomad Art Gallery depicts his powerful creative expressions of capturing moments of truth.
Silent moments in the hazy shades of the first light of the day captured through lenses by Azhar narrate the tales of this land and its people. The aesthetically beautiful photographs captured in and around the River Ravi on the outskirts of Lahore reflect ethereal images and stories untold.
Azhar Sheikh's photographs reflect his passion for capturing the serene moments in the first light of the day. Play of light and shadows remain the main theme of his remarkable photographs that gives them a touch of rare quality. In his flight of fancy while playing with light and lenses, Azhar mesmerises his viewers by getting them entangled in a mystic web of life while watching the powerful interpretation of creative moments in Azhar's photographs.
An NCA graduate as a Graphic Designer in 1989, Azhar Sheikh roamed around the world and worked in the creative world in different capacities, but photography remained his first love. In the last 20 years, he has held only one exhibition in Lahore this year in March and another exhibition at Nomad early this year, while the present exhibition is his third on the whole and second show of delight for the Islooites. No matter how slow the landscape may seem or how still the life appears through his lenses, Azhar is always successful in capturing the spirit behind that always stands still long enough for the viewer to get entrapped in its tale telling power.
Azhar's photographs appear to be life distilled and preserved for eternity. An expressive face in the backdrop of a vivid landscape, a river side waking up to the first light, a fleeting moment in nature, an abstract shape, cattle and people, these are the fundamentals of his photography that conveys, in a way no words can, with a sense of the mystery and beauty of life, nature, and the achievements of mankind.
As photographs are known to isolate the truth, exposing to us the realities of our time: war, terrorism, abuse, poverty, the same way Azhar's master pieces provide a new perspective on life and art, forcing the viewer to realise the extent to which photography has influenced our culture, helping spread awareness of our cultural identity to people of other cultures and connect us to the modern globalisation.
Azhar has used his lenses for a recording of life, for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the reality surrounding us, whether in landscape or through a priceless expression thing itself.
Through his photographs, Azhar has shown those parts of the city that normally remain unnoticed by many. The essence of his work lies in the sensitivity that he has felt and with which he has captured the magical light and shades.
Born in Lahore, raised in Karachi and graduated from NCA Lahore, Sheikh describes photography his passion and one of his most loved and cherished hobby. Azhar Sheikh's photographic exhibition would continue at Nomad till November 22.
