Peace walk held to express solidarity with terror victims
Thursday, November 05, 2009
Bureau report

PESHAWAR: The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami Wednesday staged a peace walk here to express solidarity with the victims after two massive bombings in the city.

Led by central general secretary of the party Liaqat Baloch, provincial president Prof Muhammad Ibrahim Khan and others, the JI workers started the walk from Khyber Bazaar where a suicide bomber had struck on October 9, killing 55 people and injuring many others.

Holding banners and placards, the participants passed through historic Qissa Khwani and other bazaars and reached Chirri Koban near Meena Bazaar, where a devastating car bombing killed 120 people and injured 250 besides causing colossal loss to property.

The procession turned into a public gathering at Chirri Koban and was addressed by the JI leaders.Liaqat Baloch said the bomb explosions and other terrorist activities were a conspiracy to destabilise the country and deprive it of its nuclear capability. He said the rulers had deliberately kept silent over the increasing terrorist activities. He said the Meena Bazaar bombing was a tragedy for the nation. “It is a conspiracy to defame Islam and religious scholars,” he added.

Condemning former president Musharraf, the JI leader said the military dictator pursued flawed policies while the so-called political government now in place was following in his footsteps to appease the US. He said an end to the US interference in Pakistan’s affairs was the only guarantee to peace and added that the JI would continue its efforts for doing away with the US meddling.

Prof Ibrahim said the nation was in need of peace not cash assistance from the US. He said the rulers had sold the nation in return for a few US dollars. The JI leader said the tough conditions set in the Kerry-Lugar Law would push the country into US slavery, which might trigger more restlessness.
