PESHAWAR: Legal fraternity Tuesday observed black day across the Frontier province to condemn the extra-constitutional acts of General (R) Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007 when he imposed emergency rule in the country.
The Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) hoisted black flag on the premises of the high court, besides holding a general body meeting. It urged the government to try former military dictator Musharraf for high treason charges under Article 6 for twice abrogating the constitution.
The PHCBA did not boycott the court proceedings. However, the Peshawar District Bar Association observed strike after 11 a.m. to join their fellows at the general body meeting at the PHC.
Addressing the meeting, PHCBA president Syed Muhammad Attique Shah paid homage to the lawyers and media for their struggle against the military dictator. He termed November 3 as the darkest day in the history of the country when Musharraf enforced martial law against the judiciary, resulting in the removal of 60 judges of the superior court.
PHCBA secretary-general Muhammad Issa Khan said that lawyers’ movement would continue to end social evils in the society. He urged the parliamentarians not to give constitutional cover to the controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
Former PHCBA president Abdul Lateef Afridi said that if the government was reluctant to lodge high treason case against Musharraf, then the masses would come out to do the same. He said the lawyer community would continue observing black day in the coming years as well to apprise the people of the struggle by the civil society against the unconstitutional acts of a military dictator, which, he said, would give them an inspiration to fight for the establishment of the rule of law. He said the lawyer community succeeded in ridding the nation of aristocratic rule of a dictator.
LAKKI MARWAT: The lawyers observed black day on Tuesday to condemn the November 3 unconstitutional steps and sacking of judges of superior courts by Musharraf. Speaking on the occasion, Lakki Bar president Abdul Rashid Meenakhel, former president Muhammad Yaqoob Khan, member NWFP Bar Council Zafar Iqbal, Farid Khan Maidadkhel and Sardar Ali Syedkhel said that lawyers and civil society members won the independence of judiciary by rendering great sacrifices during the two years long struggle.
MANSEHRA: Like other parts of the country, lawyer fraternity observed the November 3 as black day and boycotted the court proceedings. A procession was held on the premises of the district court with president district bar association Shahjahan Khan Swati in the chair. Speakers said lawyers’ movement was still active to achieve its objective to the supremacy and rule of law in the country.
MARDAN: The lawyers observed November 3 as a black day and boycotted court proceedings. A meeting of Mardan Bar Association was held at the Bar Room Mardan. The meeting was chaired by president Sher Muhammad Khan. Former president Abdul Hameed Khan, Jawad Khan, Muhammad Iqbal Hoti, Khalid Zaman, Khan Kawas Khan, Abdur Raziq Khan and other lawyers addressed the meeting.
The speakers condemned the 3rd November act as illegal and unconstitutional by the former president General (R) Musharraf.
NOWSHERA: The lawyers of the district bar association took out a protest procession led by the president Iftikhar Ali Khan. The speakers including Shah Zaman Khattak and others condemned Musharraf for imposing emergency on November 3 and sacking the judges of the superior court. They demanded to initiate a case against him under Article 6 of the constitution.
